James O’Brien is the senior content manager at Verve. He joined the advertising-technology company’s New York office following nearly a decade in the independent sector as a freelance journalist and a specialist in the branded-content space. His work at Verve focuses on editorial strategies and content — digital and print — that establish and reinforce the organizations’s position as a prominent thought leader and a primary industry innovator.

In the branded space, his work has helped shape the online voices of organizations including Samsung, Xerox, IBM, Coca-Cola, Toyota, Mashable, Skift, Contently, NewsCred, and Skyword. James has also consulted for teams at companies such as DreamWorks and Microsoft — developing content and strategic approaches to new mobile tech for travel brands.

James holds a master’s and a PhD in editorial studies; his doctoral dissertation focused on unpublished writings by Bob Dylan. His work as an editor includes developmental editing, copyediting, and proofreading as well as ghostwriting for authors in the final phases of bringing projects to their conclusion. He is proficient in building complex bibliographies and indices for both clients’ and his own editorial projects across genres and topics.

As a journalist, James has reported for extended periods for publications such as The Boston Globe. He has started weekly and daily newspapers in both municipal and regional markets — holding titles of editor and reporter at startup newspapers — and James has been an early proponent and adopter of blogs, online video and audio, and other multimedia engagements as they emerged within the reportorial space. He is a DJ at venues throughout NYC. James was a singer-songwriter in the US and UK in the late ’90s and early ’00s. He is a passionate home-cook.
